You grew up learning to be strong, independent, and self-reliant. Yet deep down, you find yourself struggling with self-doubt, people-pleasing, perfectionism, and avoidance. Despite trying your best, certain patterns keep showing up, and you're not sure why. You also notice that the thought, "I'll never be good enough" seems to get in the way of every decision you make. There's a pain that lives inside you, possibly caused by unresolved childhood trauma. Maybe a diagnosis of PTSD or a recent traumatic event has left you isolated, full of guilt, and unable to express emotions.
The symptoms

We hear the word “trauma” and “PTSD” used a lot in our culture. But what is trauma?
-
Trauma is the way the body reacts to something so difficult that even once it’s over, the body continues to relive it. There is no imminent danger, but the brain continues to send the message, “I’m not safe”.
-
Trauma is not what happens to someone, but the way the body responds to it. Thus, two people can go through the exact same event but have two very different responses to it.
-
When someone experiences a trauma reactions such as avoidance, reliving the event, a heightened startle response, or fear of harm or death can arise and last for several weeks. If these symptoms persist longer than a few weeks, this person could be experiencing PTSD.
-
“Why do I struggle so much when my childhood wasn’t that bad?”
-
“I know my parents did their best to raise me, but yet I still feel like I wasn’t loved by them.”
-
“Why do I keep repeating the same patterns?”
-
“Why do I feel anxious, disconnected or unworthy?”
-
“Why do my connections and relationships feel so difficult?”
-
“Why can’t I seem to move on from the past?”
-
“Do my experiences even count as trauma?”
Sometimes the experiences that shape us the most happened long ago. Many people live with the effects of their past experiences for years or even decades before even realizing their struggles could actually be trauma.

Your desire to make everyone happy or refusing to be emotionally vulnerable with others may have developed as a way to cope with the painful situations in your past. You have learned to do these things to survive in the past, even though they are no longer serving you today.
-
In our trauma therapy sessions I will help you explore your past experiences with compassion and empathy, helping you understand how they have been negatively impacting your present. We will then use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to rewrite those negative experiences to create a new experience your brain can grow from.
Healing doesn’t mean erasing the past, but erasing the pain from the past. You will be able to understand your experiences better and reconnect with the parts of yourself that may have been hidden or stuck.

"I've tried trauma therapy before.
How is this different?"
Understanding your trauma and releasing it are two completely different events. They happen in two completely different areas of the brain. The majority of trauma therapy modalities will focus on helping you understand your trauma and gradually teach you how to think about it in a more positive, less threatening way. ART will not only help you understand your trauma, but it will safely and efficiently assist in releasing the trauma that lives inside of you, giving you the peace you are searching for.
